Embroidery by Assiniboia Students

The twenty-eight pieces of embroidery in this quilt were found in a cupboard when the Indian Affairs student counselling offices were closing out of one of the buildings that was previously part of Assiniboia Residential School. Rather than throw the pieces of student artwork away, Muriel McLeod decided to take them home. After retiring, she made the work up into this quilt, hoping to honour the children who crafted the embroidery.

Assiniboia Residential School Class Photo 1958-‘59

When the land and buildings that included the former Assiniboia Residential School were sold to a private company, the remaining contents of those buildings were put out for trash collection. Theodore Niizhotay Fontaine happened to be visiting the site that day, and from one of the piles of “garbage” he retrieved this original class photo. This is the inaugural 1958-59 school year, and these are the first ninety-five of over one thousand students that attended Assiniboia Residential School.
